In the Temple of Bayon, at the heart of the ancient city of Angkor, there are 216 smiling faces of Avalokiteshvara carved on the four-sided sandstone towers. They are collectively called "Khmer Smile". This popular Khmer temple was built by King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century. It attracts travelers by the baroque style of Khmer architecture. The locals believe that this temple is located at the intersection of heaven and earth.
