Chiang Mai 700th Anniversary Celebration (1996)
To mark the 700th Anniversary Celebration of Chiang Mai, which was established in 1296 AD, on the site of an older fortified city of the Lawa people, which was called Wiang Nopburi, during the reign of King Mengrai as the new centre of the Lan Na Kingdom, after Chiang Rai, and was initially known as Noppaburi Sri Nakhon Ping Chiang Mai, with Ping being the name of the nearby river.
Ancient cultural attractions in Chiang Mai: A stucco figure on one of the outer walls of the wihaan of Wat Chedi Jed Yod in Chiang Mai which was built in 1455 by the royal command of Phaya Thilokarat, the 12th King of the Lan Na Kingdom.
