Buddhist Holy Places (1971) Phra Mahathat Meuang Nakhon in Nakhon Sri Thammarat
Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan is the main Buddhist temple of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province in southern Thailand. The main stupa of the temple, Phra Borommathat Chedi, was built by King Sri Dhammasokaraja in the early-13th century CE to establish a symbol for the Theravada Buddhism sect in the province.
The escutcheon of Nakhon Sri Thammarat shows the chedi of Wat Mahathat Wora Maha Wihaan with a halo and surrounded by the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac . The aureole refers to the fact that the spire of this chedi is made from pure gold. The zodiac refers to the twelve protectorates each of which has a sign from the Chinese zodiac as its logo. These are clockwise: Saiburi (the rat), Pattani (the ox), Klantan (the tiger), Pahang (the rabbit), Traiburi, read Saiburi, (the dragon), Phattalung (the snake), Trang (the horse), Chumphon (the goat), Banthai Semoh (the monkey), Songkhla (the cock), Takuapah (the dog), and Kraburi (the pig).
