Celebrating Visakha Puja Day. Vishaka or Vesakha Day is remembered as the Buddha’s life as it commemorates the birth, enlightenment (nirvana) and death (parinirvana) of the Buddha. In Theravada Buddhist countries, it falls on a full moon day (Uposatha day) in the fifth or sixth lunar month. In 1950, at the First Conference of the Fellowship of Buddhists held in Sri Lanka in 1950, a consensus was reached to celebrate Buddha’s birthday on the full moon day in the month of May every year and to declare this day a public holiday.
