The Emerald Buddha in his attire of the rainy season

Celebrating Visakha Puja Day .

Vishaka or Vesakha Day  is  remembered as the Buddha’s life as it commemorates the birth, enlightenment (nirvana) and death (parinirvana) of the Buddha. In Theravada Buddhist countries, it falls on a full moon day (Uposatha day) in the fifth or sixth lunar month. In 1950, at the First Conference of the Fellowship of Buddhists held in Sri Lanka in 1950, a consensus was reached to celebrate Buddha’s birthday on the full moon day in the month of May every year and to declare this day a public holiday.
