Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal

The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, constructed during the Spring and Autumn Period some 2,000 years ago, stretches more than 1,790 kilometers from Beijing in the north to Hangzhou in the south, thus being the longest and oldest manmade water course in the world.  It passes through Beijing and Tianjing Municipalities and the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, connecting the Haihe, Huanghe (Yellow), Huaihe, Changjiang (Yangtze) and Qiantang rivers.  Since its construction, the canal has played an important role in promoting the economic and cultural exchange between China's northern and southern regions, especially the industrial and agricultural development and the emergence of new towns along its edges.
