Wesak 1979 - Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka printed the follwng stamps to commemorate the Wesak 1979 celebrations. Stamps are printed Illustrating stories that happened during Buddha’s time.

Lankapatuna Samudragiri Viharaya is a Buddhist temple situated in the Trincomalee District, Eastern province of Sri Lanka. This temple which is situated near the ocean near the historic Port of Lankapatuna where Prince Dantha and Princess Hemamala set foot in Sri Lanka bringing the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha.

The Sri Maha Bodhi is said to the oldest and longest-surviving tree in the world. It was planted in 288 BC during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa, and brought from India by Princess Sangamitta. She was the daughter of Indian emperor Asoka, a Hindu who had converted to Buddhism.  It grew from a branch taken from the bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, where Siddhartha Gautama - on whose teachings Buddhism was founded - attained enlightenment and became known as Buddha more than 2,500 years ago.

Kirti Sri Rajasinha was the second Nayaka king of Kandy. He was a prince from the Madurai Nayak Dynasty and succeeded his brother-in-law to the throne in 1751.

The king is credited for the revival of Buddhism and literature in Sri Lanka. Under the guidance and influence of Weliwita Sri Saranankara Thero, with Dutch assistance, king Kirti Sri Raja Singha successfully invited Bhikkus from Siam(Thailand) to revive the higher ordination of Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka.
