Sri Lanka Daul Drummer
The performing arts of the Kandyan kingdom started life in the temple, with drumming and dancing enacted in honour of the gods – it’s thought that the kingdom’s dances were first performed for a deity called Kohomba (who is still believed to be the god who inspired the ves, Kandy’s most famous dance).
Kandy’s distinctive style of drumming and dancing subsequently spread from the temple into the cultural mainstream. Drummers still accompany the thrice-daily pujas at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy and can also now be seen (and heard) in numerous other ceremonies and celebrations across the island, ranging from traditional festivals to tourist beach weddings.
