Laos traditional festival
Boun Haw Khao Salark

This festival commemorates the dead. Offerings to the dead, including the deceased’s favourite food, are passed to monks during the ceremony, just after takbaat, along with the names of the dead persons the family wishes to honor. The monk then draws (salark) the names from the basket. He calls to each dead person and transfers the things through prayers. In the evening, the monks chant from the Buddhist texts and lay people walk around the sim. Afterwards offerings are placed near the sim.
