Laos traditional festivals
Boun Haw Khao Padap Din
This festival is devoted to remembering and paying respect to the dead ancestors, and to maethaulanii, the earth god. Relatives then present gifts, especially steamed rice (Khao), betel and cigarettes, to their friends, neighbours and to the monks who have chanted on behalf of those who have passed away. The remaining gifts are given to the spirits of the dead in packages (Haw) wrapped in Banana leaves.  The packages are put on the ground so that the spirits can reach them. While it is still dark the spirits can come and get the offerings.
