Beautiful Shiga Prefecture is part of the Kansai region in the western part of Honshu Island. Shiga's capital is the city of Otsu. Shiga borders Fukui, Gifu, Mie, and Kyoto Prefectures. Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake, is located at the center of Shiga Prefecture. The prefecture is enclosed by mountain ranges with the Hira Mountains and Mt. Hiei in the west, the Ibuki Mountains in the northeast, and the Suzuka Mountains in the southeast.
Shiga's most prominent attraction is Lake Biwa. The northern shore is especially scenic. Mt. Hira is a popular picnic spot.
