Nio Guardians of Torin-ji

Unlike mainland Japan, Okinawa’s traditional sacred sites are known as utaki. In 1614, however, Torin-ji was built in Japanese style as the first Buddhist temple on Okinawa, now with over 410 years of history. The Nio guardian statues at its gate are the southernmost and oldest Buddhist statues in Japan.
