Kongo Rikishi | |
This stamp features the Kongo Rikishi statues at the Great South Gate of Todai-ji, created around 1203. Standing over eight meters tall and carved from cypress wood, the statues were constructed using the yosegi zukuri (joined-block technique), in which eight or nine large wooden sections were joined with thick boards, then carved and painted on the outer layer. Today, only faint traces of the original colors remain. |
