To mark the 700th Anniversary of Chiang Mai — founded in 1296 AD on the site of the earlier fortified Lawa city of Wiang Nopburi by King Mengrai as the new centre of the Lan Na Kingdom, following Chiang Rai. The city was originally named Noppaburi Sri Nakhon Ping Chiang Mai, with “Ping” referring to the nearby river. The stamp depicts a stucco bas-relief of a thevada (celestial being) on the outer wall of Wat Chedi Jed Yod. |
